gross domestic product plus a small percentage. If one used data from recent years, both of these metrics would only slow the growth of health spending relative to the size of the economy as a whole. We do not expect that Baumol’s hypothesis will be proved false, but one may reasonably hope that the previously inexorable expansion of the fraction of our national effort that is devoted to health care may proceed more slowly than it has since the Medicare program began in the 1960s. Perhaps, when observing from some future vantage point, we will attribute a large part of our social progress to medical improvements and see a society in which health care has not consumed all of the increases in wealth that our ingenuity has created. Perhaps when health care spending has increased as Baumol’s hypothesis predicts, at least we will see that the money has been allocated as effectively as possible.

متن کاملCompacting a Single Flow Diverter versus Overlapping Flow Diverters for Intracranial Aneurysms: A Computational Study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Locally compacting the mesh of a flow diverter by a dynamic push-pull technique can accelerate intracranial aneurysm healing. We asked how this deployment strategy compares with overlapping 2 flow diverters for aneurysmal flow reduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using a high-fidelity virtual stent placement method, we simulated 3 flow-diverter strategies (single noncompact...
متن کاملFigure 1: Schematic of the Idealized Sidewall Aneurysm Model (left) and Camera and Fluoroscopic Shots of the Five Devices Implanted in Silicone Models
Brain aneurysms are abnormal ballooning of intracranial arteries which when left untreated may result in fatal outcome for the patients. Neurovascular stents have been used extensively in stent-assisted coiling treatment of aneurysms. Treatment with flow diverters (low porosity, fine-mesh stents) is used for complicated aneurysm geometries not amenable to coiling. Angiographic analysis with mat...
متن کاملComputational fluid dynamics study and GA modeling approach of the bend angle effect on thermal-hydraulic characteristics in zigzag channels
In the study, the thermal-hydraulic performance of the zigzag channels with circular cross-section was analyzed by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The standard K-Ꜫ turbulent scalable wall functions were used for modeling. The wall temperature was assumed constant 353 K and water was used as the working fluid. The zigzag serpentine channels with bend angles of 5 - 45° were studied for turbul...
متن کاملFilm cooling effectiveness in single row of holes: First moment closure modeling
The present article focuses on the evaluation of a first-moment closure model applicable to film cooling flow and heat transfer computations. The present first-moment closure model consists of a higher level of turbulent heat flux modeling in which two additional transport equations for temperature variance kθ and its dissipation rate εθ are ...
